Bharatanatyam

Bharatanatyam is one of India’s oldest and most revered classical dance forms, with origins tracing back to Tamil Nadu’s Tanjore district. It has deep roots in ancient Indian texts such as the Natya Shastra and Abhinaya Darpanam, which offer detailed instructions on the principles of dance, music, and performance. Initially performed as a sacred temple dance by the Devadasis, it is also known as Dasiattam and was deeply intertwined with devotional and cultural practices. The name Bharatanatyam itself is a fusion of three key elements: Bhava (emotion), Raga (melody), and Thala (rhythm), representing the emotional, musical, and rhythmic aspects of the dance.

Over the centuries, Bharatanatyam evolved through various styles, each with its own distinct features, including the Mysore, Pandanallur, Kalakshetra, and Tanjore styles. These different styles were passed down through generations, often shaped by the guru-disciple tradition, or guru parampara. In the 20th century, visionaries like E. Krishna Iyer and Rukmini Devi Arunadale played pivotal roles in the revival of Bharatanatyam, bringing it out of the temple and onto the stage, transforming it into a respected art form for performance in the modern era.

Today, Bharatanatyam continues to thrive globally, blending its rich traditional techniques with contemporary themes and innovations. The dance form has evolved to embrace new interpretations and cross-cultural collaborations, captivating audiences worldwide with its grace, precision, and emotional depth. Whether performed in traditional settings or modern stages, Bharatanatyam remains a timeless expression of artistic and cultural heritage, carrying forward its centuries-old legacy while adapting to the ever-changing landscape of global arts.
